Nearly 4.2 million Ukrainian refugees have fled the fighting in their country since February 24, according to UN figures.
They are exactly 4,176,401 people to have left Ukraine, according to a count established by the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees, mid-day Saturday. This is 38,559 more than the previous count on Friday. Europe has not seen such a flood of refugees since World War II.
Some 90 percent of those who have fled Ukraine are women and children, as Ukrainian authorities do not allow men of military age to leave. The U.N. International Organization for Migration said about 205,500 non-Ukrainians have also fled the country and may have difficulty returning home.
The UN estimates that there are almost 6.5 million internally displaced people in the country.
In total, more than ten million people, or more than a quarter of the population, have had to leave their homes, either by crossing the border to seek refuge in neighboring countries or by seeking refuge elsewhere in Ukraine.
According to UNICEF, more than half of the country's 7.5 million children are either internally displaced or refugees.
