Ukraine launches over 1,000 drones at Russia as Moscow reports major attack

Ukraine launched more than 1,000 drones at Russia overnight, including hundreds targeting Moscow, Russian officials said Sunday as the country entered the final day of its parliamentary elections.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the wave of drones as the largest attack of its kind on the Russian capital, saying 450 drones had been intercepted while heading toward Moscow.

The attack damaged the Moscow Oil Refinery and a residential building, according to Sobyanin. He said the attack was an attempt to disrupt the elections, but added that it had failed.

Across the wider Moscow region, two people were killed and 20 others injured, Governor Andrei Vorobyov said. The dead included a 74-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv used missiles and drones to target Russian oil and logistics facilities, including domestically produced Flamingo and Pelican missiles. He said the strikes were aimed at putting financial pressure on Russia’s war effort.

Zelenskyy also said Ukraine continued to face Russian attacks. A Russian drone strike on a monastery in Ukraine’s Kherson region killed a member of the clergy and wounded four people, he said.

A Russian attack on Kyiv on Saturday evening killed two children and their mother, while another child wounded in the strike later died in hospital, according to Ukrainian officials.

The drone attack came as Russia held the final day of its parliamentary elections, the first such vote since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine. Voting was also held in Ukrainian regions that Russia says it has annexed, a move rejected by Kyiv and not recognised internationally.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had shot down 1,110 Ukrainian drones across Russia, Crimea and the Black Sea. The latest strikes come as Moscow and Kyiv continue to exchange long-range drone and missile attacks targeting energy and other infrastructure.
