Spain to establish registry of those rejecting vaccination

Spain will create a registry to keep track of people who refuse COVID-19 vaccination, announced Spain's Minister of Health, Salvador Illa.

A platform by which the autonomous communities, once the vaccination campaign is kicked off, will have to communicate, on a daily basis, how the administration is evolving in each region, said the minister, as quoted by local newspaper ABC.

"Whoever doesn’t accept the vaccine won’t be able to blame the healthcare system in the future for not having given them access to it," he further explained.

Specifically, the platform will monitor the number of people who receive the vaccine each day and their personal data; as well as the data of those who refuse to do so. These will have to specify the reasons why they refuse to be vaccinated -medical contraindication, exceptional or personal reasons-.

"This is not going to be a public document and will be done with the utmost respect for data protection and Spanish legislation," he added.

As to last week, one out of every four people still reject vaccination, a national survey revealed.

In Spain, COVID-19 vaccination will be voluntary. However, the Ministry of Health is campaigning to raise the number of people willing to be vaccinated.

The Iberian country received its first large shipment of vaccines from Pfizer on Tuesday containing more than 350,000 doses. Spain aims at getting 70% of the population vaccinated "by the end of summer."

Spain remains one of the most largely infected countries by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the number of total cases surpassing 1.8 mln and total deaths reaching 50,122.
