The European Union expressed its "concern" following the appointment of an interim government by the Taliban last Tuesday, whose composition "falls short of promises" in terms of "inclusiveness" and reflecting Afghanistan's "diversity."
The composition of the new government falls short of the Taliban's promises about the creation of an inclusive government that reflects Afghanistan's political, religious and ethnic diversity, said the Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in a statement.
An "inclusive and representative" government is a key element for a "stable and peaceful" Afghanistan, the statement added, recalling that this condition is also "an essential benchmark for EU engagement." The EU, therefore, "expects such inclusion and representation in the future composition of the government," the statement insisted, two days after Afghanistan's new leaders announced the women-free composition of their government. Inclusiveness and diversity are some of the requirements that the foreign ministers of the EU-27 imposed on the Taliban last week to enter into a dialogue with them.
