A dangerous collision between tanker and vessel loaded with 400 tons of fuel in the Strait of Gibraltar

A collision between an LNG tanker and a vessel loaded with steel bars caused the gradual sinking of the latter in the Strait of Gibraltar, the authorities of Gibraltar said on Tuesday.

According to the same sources, the collision forced the closure of the port for four hours, and rescue teams were mobilized to neutralize potential dangers.

The sinking vessel “OS 35”, carrying over 400 tonnes of fuel, was directed to the eastside to ensure it could be safely beached to minimize the risks.

Its 24-strong crew remains onboard at the request of the captain but could be evacuated if necessary.

"The Gibraltar Port Authority remains at the scene and is continuously reviewing all aspects of the situation," the Gibraltar government said in a statement.
