Football has evolved into one of Morocco's most influential soft power tools, helping the Kingdom strengthen its international presence and project the image of a modern country capable of bridging political, economic and cultural spheres, according to a new analysis by Modern Diplomacy.
In an article titled "How Football Reveals Morocco’s Rise as a Connective Power", the magazine argued that football has become much more than a sport for Morocco, emerging as an instrument to enhance the country's global influence and consolidate its strategic position on the international stage.
The publication linked this transformation to several factors, including Morocco's investment in sports infrastructure, its hosting of international tournaments and the growing presence of Moroccan players at Europe's biggest clubs.
According to the analysis, these developments have significantly increased Morocco's international visibility and given the country's image a dimension that goes beyond results on the pitch.
Modern Diplomacy also highlighted Morocco's performances in major international competitions, arguing that they reflect a gradual shift in the Kingdom's global standing and pointing to Morocco's emergence as a "bridging power" capable of connecting different regions and spheres of influence.
The magazine particularly cited Morocco's historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, saying the achievement introduced a broad global audience to a modern Morocco that is confident in its identity, proud of its history and engaged in a far-reaching transformation process.
The publication stressed that football does not operate in isolation from wider national dynamics, arguing that the performances of national teams often mirror deeper transformations in governance, investment, youth development and a country's ability to pursue long-term objectives.
It also linked Morocco's football successes to years of investment in youth development, describing the Mohammed VI Football Academy as one of the clearest examples of the Kingdom's long-term strategy.
The analysis further pointed to Morocco's triumph at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup, saying the title demonstrated the depth of the country's football ecosystem and showed that recent achievements are built on a broad and sustainable development model.
Beyond sporting results, Modern Diplomacy said the Atlas Lions have projected an image rooted in strong values, highlighting scenes of players celebrating with their mothers, emphasizing the importance of family and showing respect toward opponents.
According to the magazine, the combination of competitiveness, humility and attachment to deeply rooted values generated widespread sympathy and identification that extended far beyond the football field, helping present a human and positive image of both the national team and Morocco.
The analysis also examined the significance of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal, describing the tournament as more than a sporting event and as recognition of the Kingdom's organizational capabilities.
The magazine concluded that Morocco is steadily positioning itself as a "bridging power" linking Africa, Europe, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, arguing that football has not changed Morocco's rise in the world, but has made that transformation impossible to ignore.
