Inter Milan confirm departure of title-winning coach Conte

Antonio Conte has left his position as coach of Inter Milan "by mutual consent," the Serie A champions confirmed on Wednesday.

The departure of the 51-year-old Conte was widely expected as he reportedly disagreed with bosses over planned sales from the squad this summer to bolster the club's ailing finances.

Conte previously led Juventus to three Serie A titles, won the Premier League with Chelsea and delivered Inter a first championship in a decade at the end of a two-year stint. He also coached the Italian national team 2014-2016.

"The club would like to thank Antonio for the extraordinary work that he has done, culminating in Inter’s 19th top-flight title," Inter said in a short statement.

"Antonio Conte will forever remain a part of our club’s history."

Conte led Inter to the Europa League final in his season at the San Siro and this term ended the long domination of Juventus with an emphatic title win by 12 points over city rivals AC Milan.

But less than four weeks on from this triumph he is looking for a new job - he will not be short of offers - and Inter a new coach after a pay-off was agreed, reportedly half a year's salary from his deal which ran to 2022.

Conte has been linked to Real Madrid as a potential successor to Zinedine Zidane, whose future as coach of the Spanish giants is also unclear following a season which ended without a trophy.

Inter, meanwhile, are considering their former player and Porto coach Sergio Conceicao as Conte's replacement according to Portuguese media with Lazio coach Simone Inzaghi and Massimiliano Allegri, who left Juventus in 2019, other alternatives.
