Tacit Recognition: Biden administration includes 'Sahara' as part of Morocco in a report

Although the new US administration has not yet announced its 'clear' position on the Trump administration's recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over Sahara, however, many of the signals that come from the Biden administration show its support for the recognition decision.

The last of these signals is the publication of the US State Department, on Tuesday, of its annual report on human rights practices for the year 2020, which includes reviews of human rights practices in most countries of the world, including Morocco.

The change that occurred in this year's list, which many observers considered a new step to confirm that the United States of America will not reverse the decision of Morocco's sovereignty recognition, is that the list of countries this year included Morocco with its Sahara provinces.

The previous annual reports published by the US State Department regarding human rights practices included the name "Western Sahara" in the list of countries and regions "independent" from Morocco, as is the case in the 2019 report, while in the 2020 report, the name "Western Sahara" is absent.

This step shows that the US State Department, in this case, applies the official US laws and decrees to the country, among which is that the United States of America does not recognize Western Sahara and considers this region an integral part of the Moroccan territorial border.

Although the report included indications that Morocco claims its sovereignty over the Sahara regions and referred to the ongoing conflict with the Polisario Front, however, the inclusion of the Saharan region in the Moroccan report, and the removal of the "Western Sahara" region as a region with a special status, are considered by observers as a move in favor of the Moroccan and a new blow to the Polisario Front, and supporters of the separatist proposal.

The report included a general picture of human rights practices in the Kingdom of Morocco, as it highlighted the existence of a number of criticisms and violations of human rights within the territory of the Kingdom, such as the existence of some cases of abuse of power and cases of prisoners of conscience, but it also indicated that Morocco is making efforts to stop these Violations and open investigations from time to time in cases of human rights violations
