Spain's declaration of support for the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara reflects how Morocco has succeded in reaping the fruits of the mistake committed by Algeria when it decided last year to transfer the leader of the "Polisario" Brahim Ghali for treatment in Spain in agreement with the latter on the basis that this remains secretly, according to Assahifa Arabic.
The same source added, that it was this “secret agreement” that Morocco discovered days after its implementation in April 2021, which opened the door to the developments that prompted Spain in recent days to officially announce a change in its neutral position on the Sahara issue towards declaring its support for Moroccan autonomy.
Immediately after revealing the secret of the entry of the "Polisario" leader to Spain, the series of Moroccan pressure on Madrid began, said Assahifa Arabic, adding that at first, the Spanish ambassador in Rabat was summoned to provide clarifications about this step, then the escalation developed into the summoning of the Moroccan ambassador to Spain.
Morocco considered Spain's reception of the leader of a separatist movement that disputes Morocco over the Sahara region is a blow to good-neighborly relations, so it decided to reduce its security cooperation with Spain. The situation became tense after thousands of migrants managed to storm Ceuta without any prevention by the Moroccan security forces.
Assahifa Arabic said that Morocco and Spain started afterward exchanging accusations, so that diplomatic relations between the two countries remained in crisis, until King Mohammed VI announced the end of the Brahim Ghali case in one of his speeches in August 2021, and called for a new page to be opened with Madrid, but the Spanish government did not understand the capture of this message and thought That the crisis will end for free.
In this context, the same source indicated that King Mohammed VI was clear that Moroccan relations with the rest of the countries must from now on be clear and based on loyalty and ambition, which was confirmed by Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch in a statement directed to Spain when he said that The "loyalty" that the king spoke of "must include Sahara as well."
Assahifa concluded that Spain understood, after 10 months of diplomatic arguments, that the door that it had opened for the entry of the "Polisario" leader into its territory, opened it, on the other hand, and without knowing, wide to Morocco, in order to push it out of the "comfort zone" and acknowledge For the first time, the "serious, realistic and credible" solution to the problem of the Sahara, which it was itself the cause of when it was occupied, is the plan for autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.
