Reversing US recognition of Morocco sovereignty over Sahara will lead to violence in region, letter warns Biden

After a letter sent to the U.S. President, Joe Biden, on February 17, 2021, signed by 27 U.S. senators asking him to reverse the United States recognition of Morocco sovereignty over Sahara, the members of the Washington Moroccan American Club sent a counter letter asking the president “to take in consideration the motives of such a move from some members of the senate” which was described “unhelpful”.

The Washington Moroccan American Club said in its letter that “Reversing the U.S. recognition of Moroccan sovereignty of the Sahara will only hurt us and undermine the historical ties that unite Morocco and the United States.” Adding that “Such a decision will lead to the voices of violence and separation to grow stronger in the region”.

“We know, Mr. President, the extent of your belief and conviction in the role of peace and negotiations, and we also know that the autonomy solution under Moroccan sovereignty proposed by Morocco enjoys international support,” the letter added.

The letter pointed out that “The Moroccan Sahara is considered the gateway to Africa for development, prosperity and the fight against extremism, all of which are in our interest as Americans and Moroccans who still have family and historical ties that cannot be erased.”

At the end of the letter, the Washington Moroccan American Club members expressed their “hope that the voice of wisdom and reason will prevail over the voice of division.”

The same Club has lately accused in a statement Algeria of being behind the move that the 27 U.S. senators made through a Lobby backed by Algerian Money.
