The French carmaker, Renault, has decided to suspend car production at two of its factories in Morocco next week, due to chip shortage, the company said to News agency, Reuters.
According to Reuters, Renault and other Carmakers worldwide suffer from the shortage in the ships used in engine management and driver-assistance systems, which mainly come from Asia and especially Taiwan.
“The COVID-19 crisis has driven up demand for chips used in electronics such as laptops and phones, and manufacturers are struggling to keep up, with some Chinese suppliers also hit by U.S. sanctions by the former Trump administration,” Reuters added.
The news agency said that France’s Renault would suspend production at one site in France and two in Morocco and Romania next week for several days.
The Renault group in Morocco produced, in 2020, a total of 277.474 vehicles. 209.769 units were made in the Tangier plant, and 67.705 in the Casablanca plant.
Although the pandemic affected the global demands on vehicles, Renault maintained its leadership in the market with a cumulative share of 41.1% in Morocco.
