Qatar Condemns Smara Attack, Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Sahara

Qatar has condemned the recent attack targeting the city of Smara, claimed by the Polisario Front, while reaffirming its full solidarity with Morocco and support for the kingdom’s sovereignty over the Sahara.

In an official statement issued Saturday, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Doha renews its backing for Morocco and for all measures undertaken by Rabat to preserve its sovereignty, territorial integrity, security, and stability.

The Qatari ministry also reiterated the country’s firm rejection of violence, terrorism, and criminal acts regardless of their motives or causes, stressing the importance of respecting the security, stability, and unity of states.

Qatar’s condemnation comes amid growing international reactions denouncing the attack on Smara, with several countries warning against escalation and emphasizing the need to protect civilians and preserve regional stability.

The United States, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the United Arab Emirates, the Czech Republic, Liberia, and Bahrain had previously issued statements condemning the attack and supporting efforts aimed at maintaining stability and advancing the UN-led political process.

Doha has consistently expressed support for Morocco’s position on the Sahara issue. Last October, Qatar reaffirmed before the United Nations its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the basis for reaching a final settlement to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

Addressing the UN General Assembly’s Fourth Committee in New York, Qatar’s representative described the autonomy plan as a “constructive initiative” that provides an objective foundation for a realistic and lasting solution to the conflict.

Qatar also voiced support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy for the Moroccan Sahara aimed at facilitating a consensual and durable political solution within the framework of the UN-led political process and in accordance with Security Council resolutions, while respecting Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
