'Polisario' leader crisis: Spain, Morocco relations to worsen even further

The Spanish Foreign Minister, Arancha Gonzalez Laya, said on Sunday, that the ‘Polisario’ leader, Brahim Ghali, will return to his ‘country’ after he recovers from his health problems. This statement is considered as a response to the statement made by the Moroccan ambassador to Madrid, when she said on Friday that Ghali's exit from Spain in the same way he entered will worsen the crisis between the two countries.

Arancha Gonzalez Laya added in a statement to the national radio, that Spain had promised to provide health care to Brahim Ghali, and then he would return to his ‘country’ after he recovers, expressing her hope that Brahim Ghali will fulfill his judicial obligations with the Spanish justice before his departure.

Arancha Gonzalez Laya indicated that there are a series of judicial procedures that she hopes Ibrahim Ghali will abide by before the Supreme Court of Spain before leaving the country, despite the fact that the Supreme Court in Madrid refused to respond to the prosecutors' request to arrest the leader of the ‘Polisario’.

Brahim Ghali is facing charges of committing crimes against human rights, such as kidnapping and rape, and these crimes have occurred on Spanish soil, and he has been wanted by the Spanish judiciary for several years on the background of complaints filed by persons of Spanish nationality.

Observers believe that this statement from the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs carries confirming indications that Brahim Ghali will leave Spain as soon as he recovers, despite Moroccan warnings about this step, which will further complicate the crisis between the two countries.

Although the Minister of Foreign Affairs indicated the possibility of taking some legal measures against the Polisario leader, it will not reach the level of aspirations of the victims who accuse Ghali of committing heinous crimes against them, which in normal cases he is supposed to be arrested in order to pursue him in front of justice.

According to a previous report by the Spanish newspaper "El Pais", Madrid had provided guarantees to Algeria that Brahim Ghali would not be subjected to any judicial prosecution, given that Algeria had ensured his transfer for treatment in Spain, noting that Spain accepted this because of its dependent on Algerian gas, which makes it possible to arrest Brahim Ghali and his prosecution is almost impossible.
