Morocco's Economic Openness, Infrastructure Drive Industrial Success, Minister Says

Morocco's Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, said on Monday that the Kingdom's commitment to economic openness, sustained public investment in infrastructure, and policy continuity has laid the foundation for its industrial transformation and export growth.

Speaking at the 4th Africa Economic Symposium in Rabat, Mezzour said Morocco had deliberately embraced international competition despite the social and economic costs associated with such a strategic choice, arguing that long-term consistency in public policies has been critical to the country's economic development.

The minister highlighted public investment in infrastructure as a key pillar of Morocco's industrial strategy, saying projects in ports, highways, and logistics have enabled the emergence of a competitive manufacturing base.

He pointed to the automotive industry as a prime example, noting that investments in transport and logistics infrastructure have supported the sector's expansion into Morocco's largest export industry.

Mezzour also underscored the opportunities presented by artificial intelligence, saying the technology is democratizing access to knowledge and capabilities that were once available only to large organizations.

He stressed the importance of equipping citizens with the skills needed to use AI effectively while encouraging the development of artificial intelligence solutions that reflect local needs, communities, and values.

Turning to the broader African context, Mezzour said the continent's vast potential can only be translated into tangible development through greater confidence in Africa's own capabilities, continued investment in infrastructure, and stable public policies.

Despite Africa's young population, abundant natural resources, and considerable talent, he said the continent still faces major challenges, including limited access to electricity, education, and stability, calling for African-led solutions tailored to local realities.

The two-day Africa Economic Symposium is examining pathways for transforming Africa's natural resources into engines of sustainable growth while addressing the climate and energy transition, accelerating digital transformation, and mobilizing financing for long-term development.
