Morocco Steps Up Tuberculosis Screening and Treatment Efforts

Morocco's Ministry of Health and Social Protection is celebrating this Tuesday World Tuberculosis Day with the theme of "Beyond the Lungs: Recognizing and Addressing Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis".

This event aims to strengthen awareness-raising efforts regarding this disease, encourage early access to health services, and support healthcare professionals in identifying and managing extrapulmonary forms, the ministry said in a press release.

This year, particular emphasis is placed on screening efforts and comprehensive management of all forms of tuberculosis, with specific attention given to extrapulmonary forms, still insufficiently know and often difficult to diagnose, despite their significant impact on the national epidemiological situation, the same source adds.

According to national epidemiological data, 53% of new tuberculosis cases recorded in Morocco in 2025 involve extrapulmonary forms, which calls for strengthened public health awareness campaigns as well as increased clinical vigilance on the part of healthcare professionals, in order to improve early diagnosis and ensure appropriate care, the press release specifies.

On this occasion, a national remote scientific webinar will be held on Thursday, with the participation of ministry officials, healthcare professionals, representatives of learned societies, partner nongovernmental organizations, and United Nations agencies.

This meeting will serve as an important step toward analyzing the epidemiological situation of tuberculosis in Morocco, reviewing the latest advances in the diagnosis and treatment of extrapulmonary forms, and promoting the exchange of expertise as well as capacity building in this field.

The fight against tuberculosis remains a public health priority, as part of the implementation of the National Strategic Plan for Tuberculosis Prevention and Control in Morocco 2024–2030, which aims to reduce mortality rate by 60% and  disease incidence by 35% by 2030.

The Ministry reiterates that tuberculosis is a preventable and curable disease, provided it is timely diagnosed and treatment protocol is followed throughout the entire course of treatment.
