The Moroccan capital Rabat is set to host next Friday a meeting that will gather the Spanish Minister of Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Yelva Johansson, and the Moroccan Minister of Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit.
According to Spain’s news agency EFE, the meeting will be for addressing the illegal immigration and European migration policy, as well as, the immigration tragedy which occurred on Melilla borders last June 24.
The three officials will try to discuss the reasons that stand behind the tragedy of Melilla and the ways that can be followed to avoid such dramatic events in the future, as well as the new strategies to deal with the phenomenon of illegal immigration.
More than 20 immigrants lost their lives in a violent attempt to overcome the borders of Melilla last June, in a collective attempt composed of almost 2 thousand people.
Several global NGOs have called on for an investigation to reveal what happened and caused the death of a number of Sub-Saharan immigrants on the border of Melilla.
Some field reports talk about a stampede that occurred while hundreds of immigrants were trying to break through the Melilla fence, whereas some NGOs accuse Moroccan and Spanish forces of excessive use of violence to stop the immigrants.
