Morocco's National Vigilance Committee for Flood Management and Monitoring convened in Rabat on Thursday to assess the country's readiness for potential flooding ahead of the summer storm season and strengthen coordination among government agencies responsible for disaster response.
The meeting forms part of Morocco's national strategy to enhance resilience against extreme weather events, particularly floods, through improved preparedness, early warning systems and coordinated emergency interventions.
Held at the start of the summer season, the session focused on reinforcing vigilance as Morocco typically experiences intense thunderstorms during this period, which can trigger flash floods in vulnerable regions.
Officials reviewed measures aimed at improving coordination between national, regional and local authorities to ensure rapid intervention and better protection of lives, property and critical infrastructure.
The committee also assessed progress in developing a national atlas identifying flood-prone areas, alongside the preparation of flood risk prevention plans intended to guide future mitigation efforts.
Another key item on the agenda was the expansion of flood monitoring and early warning systems, which authorities consider essential for strengthening risk assessment, improving decision-making and reducing the impact of extreme weather events.
Morocco has been investing in modernizing its disaster risk management framework in recent years as climate change increases the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events across North Africa.
At the regional level, flood vigilance committees chaired by governors continue to meet regularly to coordinate preparedness measures, oversee emergency response plans and ensure close cooperation between provincial authorities and civil protection services.
During flood events, these regional and provincial committees remain in continuous session until the danger has passed and essential public services have been restored.
The national committee's regular meetings are intended to strengthen Morocco's overall flood risk management system by shifting from a reactive approach to a preventive model centered on forecasting, preparedness and resilience, as the country seeks to better adapt to growing climate-related risks.
