Morocco has strongly condemned the drone attacks targeting the United Arab Emirates, reaffirming its full solidarity with Abu Dhabi and support for the country's security and sovereignty during a special session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors.
Speaking during the extraordinary meeting convened at the request of Arab members of the Board, Morocco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to international organizations in Vienna, Azzeddine Farhane, denounced what he described as “heinous attacks” carried out against the UAE through three drones, including one that struck a power generator located outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region.
Farhane stressed that Morocco stands firmly alongside the United Arab Emirates and supports its legitimate right to defend its security, sovereignty, and the safety of its citizens and residents. He recalled the steadfast positions expressed by King Mohammed VI regarding attacks previously suffered by the UAE.
The Moroccan diplomat welcomed the prompt and transparent communication provided by Emirati authorities to the IAEA following the incident, as well as the measures taken to contain its consequences and maintain radiation levels around the Barakah facility within normal limits.
He also praised the UAE’s continued efforts to ensure the safe, secure, and peaceful operation of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, noting that the facility operates under IAEA safeguards and in accordance with the highest international standards.
Farhane further commended the ongoing coordination between the IAEA and the competent Emirati authorities, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in preserving nuclear safety and security.
Morocco, he said, remains confident that the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant was designed, built, and is operated according to the strictest global standards under the supervision of the UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation and in full compliance with IAEA safety requirements.
The ambassador concluded by reaffirming Morocco’s support for the IAEA and its Director General, Rafael Grossi, in their efforts to monitor and assess developments related to nuclear safety, nuclear security, and safeguards in member states.
