Morocco informs Spain of organizing transit operation next summer

The Moroccan government has informed its Spanish counterpart of its intention to organize the annual maritime transit operation next summer, an informed source confirmed to Assahifa Arabic.

The annual sea transit operation is an operation organized in coordination between Morocco and Spain in summer to facilitate the crossing of millions of passengers across Gibraltar Street, mainly Moroccans who live abroad.

The operation was canceled last summer due to the Coronavirus outbreak that caused Morocco and Spain to close their borders and stop the movements of people between the two countries.

According to the informed source, the Moroccan government has informed Spain of its intention to return to organize the transit operation next summer in the same form of previous years before coronavirus and has also told the officials of Northern Morocco’s ports in order to prepare for the operation.

The Moroccan government did not talk with Spain about the situation of the crossing border points of Ceuta and Melilla if they will be included in the transit operation or not, the source pointed out.

However, any surprise could happen before next June, the usual date of the beginning of the transit operation between Spain and Morocco, especially if Coronavirus cases continued to rise in Europe.

As a reminder, In the summer of 2019, Morocco welcomed nearly 3 million Moroccans living abroad who entered the country after a transit in Spain.
