Morocco Dismantles Extremist Cell Linked to Criminal Network in Multiple Cities

Moroccan security authorities have dismantled a six-member extremist cell suspected of involvement in a series of criminal activities linked to radical ideology, in coordinated operations carried out over April 5–6, officials said.

The operations were led by Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), operating under the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), the country’s domestic intelligence service.

According to a statement released by the BCIJ, the suspects were arrested in separate interventions in the cities of Kenitra and Casablanca, as well as in the Dar El Gueddari area in Sidi Kacem province and the town of Sidi Taybi.

Authorities said the individuals are believed to have been involved in crimes motivated by extremist ideology, including theft, robbery and the laundering of illicit proceeds under what is described as the “legitimization of spoils” doctrine.

Search operations conducted as part of the investigation led to the seizure of extremist literature and manuscripts, along with a range of bladed weapons, including both sharp and blunt instruments.

Investigators also confiscated sums of money in Moroccan dirhams suspected to be linked to criminal activities, in addition to equipment believed to have been used in carrying out the crimes.

These included a balaclava, gloves, three vehicles — among them two cargo vans — and a motorcycle, which authorities suspect were used to facilitate the group’s operations.

Preliminary findings indicate that the suspects had adopted extremist beliefs and had recently turned to organized theft and burglary as a means of generating illicit income.

According to the BCIJ, the group targeted livestock farms in rural areas surrounding Kenitra and Sidi Slimane, carrying out raids to steal animals and other goods.

The stolen items were then reportedly sold in local markets, including in the commune of Joumaa Shim in Safi province and the town of Zemamra in Sidi Bennour province.

Authorities believe the group operated within a coordinated network, combining criminal activity with ideological motivations rooted in extremism.

The investigation is ongoing and aims to determine the full extent of the suspects’ activities, as well as to establish any connections between their criminal acts and extremist affiliations.

Security services are also working to identify and apprehend any additional individuals who may have been involved in or supported the network.

The suspects have been placed in police custody pending further investigation, under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor’s Office responsible for terrorism and extremism cases.

Morocco has in recent years intensified its counterterrorism efforts, with authorities regularly announcing the dismantling of suspected extremist cells and networks.

Officials say these operations are part of a broader strategy to prevent both terrorist acts and the spread of radical ideologies, particularly when intertwined with organized crime.
