Denmark has welcomed Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara as a credible proposal and a good basis for a mutually agreed solution to the dispute, in line with the European Union’s position.
The position was expressed by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen on Friday during a press statement following a visit to Copenhagen by Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita.
Rasmussen said Denmark “lauds, in line with the European Union’s position, the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797.”
The Danish foreign minister also praised Morocco’s autonomy proposal, describing it as “credible” and saying it makes “a serious and essential contribution to the ongoing UN process.”
He reiterated Denmark’s view that the autonomy plan provides “a good basis for a mutually agreed solution by all parties” to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
Denmark’s position comes as the country serves as a member of the UN Security Council, further underscoring its support for the autonomy plan within the framework of the UN-led political process.
The Danish position also reflects the growing international support for Morocco’s proposal as a basis for resolving the Sahara dispute.
