Morocco, Czech Republic Deepen Defense Ties with Focus on Industry and Military Cooperation

Morocco and the Czech Republic have placed defense cooperation at the center of their evolving bilateral relationship, signaling a shift toward more structured military and industrial collaboration as both countries move to elevate ties to a strategic level.

During talks held in Rabat on Thursday, Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Petr Macinka highlighted defense as a key pillar of cooperation, alongside security and economic partnerships. The discussions underscored a growing convergence between Rabat and Prague on strategic and security-related issues.

A central element of this momentum is the military agreement signed in October 2024, which both sides described as a major step forward. Once ratified, the agreement is expected to unlock new avenues for cooperation, particularly in defense industry development, military training, joint exercises, and technical coordination between the two countries’ armed forces.

Beyond operational cooperation, the two sides also expressed interest in expanding collaboration in defense manufacturing. They agreed to explore opportunities for industrial co-development in the sector, pointing to a longer-term ambition to build integrated defense capabilities and strengthen technological exchange.

The emphasis on defense reflects a broader effort by both countries to anchor their partnership in high-value and strategic sectors, as geopolitical and security considerations gain prominence in bilateral relations.

Alongside defense, the two ministers reaffirmed their commitment to establishing a structured strategic partnership, building on what they described as an “unprecedented” momentum in relations. They noted that ties have reached a level of maturity that now carries strategic importance across multiple domains.

The officials also agreed to maintain regular and in-depth political dialogue on key international issues, while sustaining the pace of high-level visits and economic missions.

They welcomed progress achieved since the 2023 Prague Joint Declaration, which significantly expanded the scope of cooperation and laid the groundwork for deeper engagement.

In parallel, Rabat and Prague committed to strengthening collaboration in a range of high-value sectors, including health and pharmaceuticals, science and innovation, water management, infrastructure, the automotive industry, smart cities, aerospace, cybersecurity, digitization, and rail transport.

The two countries also plan to convene the first meeting of the Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation in Prague later this year, seen as a key mechanism to translate shared ambitions into concrete projects.

On the economic and industrial front, Morocco is set to increase its visibility in the Czech Republic, notably through its participation as a guest country at the Brno International Fair in 2027.

The Czech Republic also welcomed Morocco’s role as a co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal, noting that the event could generate significant development opportunities and open the door for Czech companies to engage in major projects.

Finally, both sides stressed the importance of strengthening cultural and human ties, agreeing to promote academic exchanges, public diplomacy initiatives, and greater mobility for students and researchers as part of a broader effort to deepen people-to-people connections.
