Moroccan Rights Group Submits Ceuta, Melilla Migration Report to UN Mechanisms

The Moroccan League for the Defense of Human Rights said Saturday that it had submitted its report on migration and attempted crossings involving Ceuta and Melilla to UN human rights mechanisms, international organisations and Spain’s ambassador to Morocco.

The submission follows the findings and recommendations of a synthesis report prepared by the League on rights violations linked to migration and border-crossing attempts to the two cities, according to a statement published by the organisation.

The League said it had submitted a copy of the report to the UN Human Rights Council’s special procedures, as well as information and evidence to relevant UN bodies dealing with the rights of migrants, torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, racial discrimination and xenophobia, and violence against women and girls.

The submission also covered UN mechanisms addressing children’s rights, the right to life, and investigations into extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, the League said.

Copies of the report were also shared with several international and regional human rights organisations and coalitions, it added.

The League said the move was aimed at raising public awareness of the rights violations documented in the report and mobilising international human rights support for its call for an independent, impartial and transparent investigation.

It also called for accountability and an end to impunity, as well as greater protection for migrants and refugees, particularly those most vulnerable to rights violations, including women and children.
