Morocco Among African Countries Accelerating EV Shift Amid Fuel Supply Pressures

Morocco is emerging as one of Africa’s leading electric vehicle markets as countries across the continent accelerate efforts to reduce dependence on imported fuel and transition toward cleaner transport systems, according to a report by the Associated Press.

The report highlighted Morocco among the continent’s main EV markets alongside South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Nigeria, as African countries increasingly invest in electric mobility, manufacturing capacity, and renewable energy infrastructure.

Africa imported 44,358 electric vehicles from China in 2025, up sharply from 19,386 in 2024, according to data from China’s Commerce Ministry cited by AP. The imports, valued at more than $200 million, reflect growing demand for electric transport across the continent.

While Ethiopia has led the continental push after banning imports of new gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles in 2024, Morocco was identified as one of the major markets participating in Africa’s broader transition toward electric mobility.

The Associated Press noted that Morocco, along with Egypt and South Africa, is pursuing policies aimed at encouraging EV adoption through incentives, industrial investments, and support for clean energy projects.

The shift comes as African countries face mounting pressure from fuel price volatility and supply disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions affecting global energy markets.

Experts cited in the report said the expansion of electric mobility could help African countries reduce exposure to fluctuations in oil prices while strengthening long-term energy security.

Bob Wesonga, policy and investments lead at the Africa E-Mobility Alliance, told AP that the transition toward EVs is beginning to reduce pressure on fuel demand across the continent.

The report also pointed to the growing strategic importance of renewable energy in supporting Africa’s electric mobility ambitions, especially as countries seek alternatives to costly fossil fuel imports.

Morocco has increasingly positioned itself as a regional industrial hub for automotive manufacturing and renewable energy, sectors seen as central to the country’s economic and industrial strategy.

The Kingdom has invested heavily in renewable energy infrastructure over the past decade, including large-scale solar and wind projects, while also expanding its automotive industry to attract international manufacturers and suppliers.

According to AP, experts believe that lower operating and maintenance costs associated with electric vehicles could gradually reduce transportation costs and improve economic opportunities across African countries.

However, the report noted that significant challenges remain, including limited charging infrastructure, affordability concerns, and the need for stronger electricity distribution systems to support wider EV adoption.

Despite these obstacles, analysts cited by AP said the long-term trajectory toward electric mobility in Africa appears increasingly clear, as governments seek to reshape energy consumption patterns and reduce reliance on imported fuel.
