International condemnations continued to mount this week following the projectile attack targeting the city of Smara in Morocco’s Sahara, claimed by the Polisario Front, amid growing warnings that renewed escalation threatens the United Nations-led political process and regional stability.
A series of Western and Arab countries have denounced the attack in recent days, while reaffirming support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative and for efforts aimed at reaching a political solution to the Sahara dispute under UN auspices.
The Czech Republic became the latest country to condemn the attack, with its embassy in Rabat calling for an immediate end to actions capable of undermining de-escalation efforts and the political track sponsored by the United Nations.
In a statement published on its official account, Prague stressed that the escalation must stop in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2797 adopted in 2025, reaffirming support for a political solution based on realism, compromise, and consensus.
The Czech diplomatic mission also emphasized that Morocco’s autonomy initiative represents a basis for a “just, lasting, and mutually acceptable” solution to the regional dispute, reflecting broader European support for Rabat’s political approach.
The United Kingdom also condemned the Polisario attacks on Smara, warning that they “threaten to undermine peace efforts.” Through its embassy in Rabat, London reiterated support for the efforts led by the United Nations and the United States to resolve the conflict in line with Security Council Resolution 2797, urging all parties to engage constructively to achieve a lasting settlement.
Belgium similarly denounced the attacks and expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the most credible framework for resolving the conflict.
The United Arab Emirates issued one of the strongest reactions, condemning what it described as a “terrorist” attack targeting the Moroccan city of Smara and injuring one person.
In a statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly denounced the attack and reiterated the country’s rejection of all forms of violence, extremism, and terrorism aimed at destabilizing security and stability.
Abu Dhabi also reaffirmed its “full solidarity” with Morocco and its support for the kingdom’s legitimate sovereign rights over the Moroccan Sahara, stressing support for all measures preserving Morocco’s security, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and regional stability.
The United States had earlier condemned the attacks through its mission to the United Nations, warning that targeting civilian areas threatens regional stability and undermines progress toward peace efforts in the region.
France also joined the growing international reactions by condemning the attack and reaffirming support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the basis for a political solution under UN supervision.
The expanding wave of condemnations reflects increasing international concern over any escalation that could derail diplomatic efforts or threaten civilian security in Morocco’s southern provinces, while reinforcing support among several international partners for Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the framework for ending the dispute.
