Germany Backs Moroccan Autonomy Plan, Signals Diplomatic and Economic Alignment

Germany has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the central framework for resolving the Sahara dispute, signaling its intention to align both diplomatically and economically with this position.

The stance was outlined in a joint declaration issued at the close of the second session of the Morocco-Germany Multidimensional Strategic Dialogue, held Thursday in Rabat between Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and his German counterpart Johann Wadephul.

According to the declaration, Germany emphasized the centrality of autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as the most viable basis for settling the regional dispute over the Sahara. Berlin also expressed its intention to act in line with this position across both diplomatic and economic fronts.

Germany welcomed United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which affirms that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could represent the most feasible solution” to the dispute.

The declaration further reiterated Germany’s view that Morocco’s autonomy initiative constitutes “a serious and credible basis for negotiations” aimed at reaching a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution.

Berlin also reaffirmed its full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to advance the political process, stressing that negotiations should be conducted on the basis of the Moroccan autonomy plan.

In this context, Germany welcomed Morocco’s readiness to clarify the contours of autonomy under its sovereignty, as part of efforts to move the political process forward.

The joint declaration concluded by underscoring Germany’s commitment to act consistently with this position in both diplomatic and economic domains, in accordance with international law.
