French Magazine: Morocco Expected to Record 'Appreciable' Economic Growth Despite Pandemic

Morocco is expected to record an "appreciable" economic growth in spite of the uncertainties related to the pandemic of the novel coronavirus, writes the French magazine Le Point on Monday.

While cancellations follow one another and tourism is suffering, "the Moroccan economy is recovering," the French weekly notes, quoting Roberto Cardarelli, the head of mission for Morocco at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

With his teams, he has recently completed a virtual mission to assess the state of the economy of the Kingdom, recalls Le Point, highlighting the conclusions of this mission for which, after a contraction of 6.3% in 2020, the Moroccan GDP should grow by 6.3% in 2021, "one of the highest rates of the Middle East and North Africa region."

Morocco is far ahead of the 3.2% growth forecast for Algeria and 3% for Tunisia, whose "economies remain vulnerable", the French media notes, adding that "the economic recovery should therefore continue in the coming years, despite the aftermath of the pandemic".

For Roberto Cardarelli, "thanks to a particularly effective vaccination campaign and the rapid response of the authorities, the health crisis has been contained and the Moroccan economy is recovering."

According to the expert, the Moroccan economy has "regained almost the ground lost during the severe global recession of 2020" due to the COVID-19 epidemic."
