France, Haiti, and Guinea Reaffirm Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Sahara

France, Haiti, and Guinea reiterated on Wednesday their strong support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, voicing backing for the Kingdom’s autonomy initiative during separate meetings held in Rabat with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on the sidelines of the second Ministerial Conference on Peacekeeping in Francophone Environments.

French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot reaffirmed Paris’ position that “the present and future” of the Sahara lie “within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty,” recalling the stance conveyed by French President Emmanuel Macron to King Mohammed VI in July 2024.

Barrot described Morocco’s autonomy proposal as “the only basis for a just, lasting and negotiated political solution” and highlighted France’s expanding diplomatic, cultural, and economic engagement in the Sahara region, including the opening of a visa center, a French cultural institution in Laayoune, and new investment initiatives.

Haiti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship also reiterated her country’s “constant position” in favor of Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over all its territory, including the Sahara.

She reaffirmed support for the autonomy plan as “the only credible and realistic solution” to the regional dispute and welcomed what she described as the “historic” UN Security Council Resolution 2797 endorsing the initiative within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.

The joint communiqué issued after the talks further underlined Haiti’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and praised development efforts in the Kingdom’s southern provinces.

Guinea likewise renewed its “firm, constant, and unwavering” support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara during talks between Foreign Minister Dr. Morissanda Kouyaté and Bourita.

Kouyaté reaffirmed backing for the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the only credible and realistic basis for resolving the dispute, while welcoming the adoption of Resolution 2797 by the UN Security Council as a milestone reinforcing the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty.
