The change in the position of the Spanish government, which now supports the Moroccan autonomy initiative to resolve the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, "was necessary", said former Spanish Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz.
"The foreign policy of a country - always conditioned by geography and history - is defined by the preservation of its interests and strategic needs, in addition to other realities that affect its general interest," added Fernandez Diaz in an op-ed published Monday in the Spanish newspaper "La Razon" under the title "State policy with Morocco".
In this sense, the change in the government's position on the Sahara issue "was necessary". "I affirm categorically that it was necessary'', he insisted.
For the former Spanish minister, "the stability of Morocco is strategic for us", ensuring that "it is necessary to maintain a bilateral relationship based on loyalty, trust and mutual cooperation".
Following this decision, "Morocco is now recognized as a partner and a priority ally for the foreign policy of Spain and the EU, with which we must promote cooperation at all levels," concluded Fernandez Diaz.
