Flood Risks Prompt Morocco to Suspend Schooling in Several Regions

Moroccan education authorities have announced a temporary suspension of classes in several northwestern regions on Monday, 2 February 2026, due to expected heavy rainfall and potential flooding.

The regional directorate of education in Tangier-Asilah stated that the measure affects all schools, public and private, and comes as a precautionary step to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and school staff. The authorities added that the situation will be continuously reassessed based on weather developments.

According to official reports, the suspension also covers Sidi Kacem and Souk El Arbaa El Gharb provinces, where early warning teams observed rising river levels and localized floods that have disrupted transportation and posed risks to some school facilities.

In Sidi Kacem, several rural and urban communes were affected due to difficulties for students and staff to safely reach schools, as well as concerns over water damage to some school buildings. In Souk El Arbaa El Gharb, all schools in several areas were closed after flooding of key roads made commuting unsafe.

Education authorities emphasized that the suspension is preventive and that schools will reopen once the weather stabilizes and flood risks subside, highlighting that the safety of students and educational personnel remains the top priority.
