Three explosive projectiles landed Tuesday near the local prison in Morocco's Smara, triggering a large-scale security response, according to initial information from the scene. No casualties were reported.
Authorities quickly sealed off the area surrounding the prison facility and launched a field investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident. Security forces, including the police, the Royal Gendarmerie, and the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, were heavily deployed on site.

Local sources indicated that one of the projectiles caused a limited explosion near the prison’s entrance, without damaging infrastructure or causing injuries.
Preliminary assessments suggest that suspicion is directed toward the Polisario Front, given similarities with previous attacks targeting the city.
The incident comes amid growing international backing for Morocco’s autonomy initiative as a solution to the Western Sahara dispute.
Smara witnessed a similar attack in October 2023, when a residential neighborhood was struck by a projectile during a wedding, killing one person and injuring others. Morocco formally notified the United Nations of that incident.
