Tanzania is expected to be the next country to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and open a consulate in one of the Sahara region cities, Dakhla or Laayoune, diplomatic sources told Assahifa Arabic.
According to the same source, Tanzania has already taken its decision in this matter, after several meetings between Moroccan officials and Tanzanian counterparts in order to strengthen the bilateral ties.
Tanzania was one of the few countries which still support the Polisario, the Front that fights Morocco over the Sahara and calls for separation.
If Tanzania opened a consulate in Morocco’s Sahara soon, it would bear the number 28, which refers to the number of countries that opened consulates in the Sahara.
The United States has been the lastest country to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Sahara, as it announced its recognition in 2020 during Trump’s administration.
