Detecting 43 Delta variant cases: Morocco's Ministry of Health warns of deteriorating epidemiological situation

The Moroccan Ministry of Health warned on Wednesday against the deterioration of the epidemiological situation in the country, after the observation of an acceleration of contaminations with the new coronavirus (Covid-19) for the second week in a row.

"For the second week in a row, the national system of monitoring and epidemiological surveillance records an acceleration of new cases of Covid-19 and an increase in severe cases, something that suggests a further deterioration of the epidemiological situation in case of continued indifference of citizens, negligence and non-compliance with precautionary measures and barrier gestures," warned the Ministry in a statement.

This worrying situation comes in the wake of the lifting of restrictions on international travel and the resumption of social, sporting and cultural activities, coupled with the advanced relaxation of restrictions on night lockdown and internal travel, it noted.

To avoid resorting to the tightening of measures, the Ministry called on citizens not to underestimate the threat facing the country, especially after the emergence of cases of mutant variants that spread rapidly and are highly contagious.

The genomic surveillance system has, in fact, detected numerous cases resulting from mutant variants of the SARS-CoV virus, including 43 cases caused by the Delta mutant in four regions of Morocco, it added.

In the light of all these data, it has been noted unfortunately a total slackening, even the absence of respect for preventive measures and the simplest barrier gestures that do not cost anything, despite the continuous warnings launched by the Ministry of Health, which specifies that taking the two shots of the vaccine against Covid-19 does not prevent the possibility of being contaminated and transmitting the virus.

Herd immunity requires the vaccination of at least two-thirds of the population, which makes it mandatory to continue observing and complying with preventive measures for both vaccinated and unvaccinated persons, the statement said.

Therefore, the Ministry calls on all citizens to scrupulously respect the precautionary measures, including social distancing, avoidance of unnecessary gatherings, proper wearing of masks, disinfection of hands before touching the mouth, nose or eyes, frequent washing of hands with water, soap or hydroalcoholic solutions.
