Described as diplomatic victory of Morocco: Will Spanish Government’s reshuffle end crisis with Rabat?

The Spanish media has described the departure of Arancha Gonzalez Laya its position as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain, and replacing her with Jose Manuel Albares, former Spain's ambassador to France, as a diplomatic victory of Morocco.

The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, announced yesterday a large reshuffle in his government, among the changes that were carried out, the replacement of Aranacha Gonzalez Laya, who has been considered the person who has flamed the diplomatic crisis with Morocco.

According to the Spanish media, the now former Minister of Foreign Affairs is the one who gave the green light to receive the Polisario leader, Brahim Ghali, in Spain last April. The decision has caused a huge crisis with Morocco.

Morocco has considered the Spanish decision to host its number one enemy, as a stab in the back of the good neighborly relations between the two countries, and has reacted with several measures, such as cutting the diplomatic relations and reducing the level of cooperation in significant fields as Terrorism and security.

In spite of various Spanish diplomatic attempts to end the crisis with Rabat, nothing has been changed, for this reason, observers believe that the departure of Arancha Gonzalez Laya, could be the first step in the track of the improvement of the bilateral relations between Spain and Morocco.

However, other observers think the replacement of Arancha Gonzalez Laya could ease the crisis between the two countries but it will not end it as long as Morocco seeks a Spanish attitude to support the Moroccan sovereignty over Sahara as the step that was taken by the United States last December.
