The consumer price index (CPI) in Morocco rose by 3.1% in January 2022, compared to the same month of the previous year, said the High Commission for Planning (HCP).
This increase is due to the rise in the index of food products of 4.3% and that of non-food products of 2.3%, explained the HCP in an information note on the CPI for January 2022.
For non-food products, the variations range from a decrease of 0.2% in "communication" to an increase of 5.9% in "Transport", added the same source.
Compared to December 2021, the CPI has experienced, during January 2022, a stagnation resulting from the decline of 0.1% in the index of food products and the rise of 0.1% in the index of non-food products.
The increases in food products observed between December 2021 and January 2022 concern mainly "bread and cereals" with 1.9%, "oils and fats" (0.8%) and "mineral waters, soft drinks, fruit juices and vegetables" (0.3%), noted the HCP, adding that, on the other hand, prices have decreased by 4.4% for "vegetables", 0.6% for "meat" and 0.5% for "Fruit".
For non-food products, the increase was mainly recorded in the prices of "tobacco" with 3.5% and "fuel" with 1.1%.
Under these conditions, the core inflation indicator, which excludes products with volatile prices and products with public tariffs, would have increased during January 2022 by 0.3% compared to December 2021 and by 3.2% compared to January 2021.
