Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, held talks on Monday in Rabat with United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, who is on his second official visit to the Kingdom.
The meeting focused on Morocco’s role in United Nations peacekeeping operations and the Kingdom’s contribution to international efforts aimed at maintaining peace and security in conflict-affected regions.
Morocco’s engagement in UN peacekeeping missions reflects a longstanding commitment that dates back to 1960 and is rooted in a strategic vision championed by King Mohammed VI, according to information presented during the discussions.
Currently ranked among the top troop-contributing countries to UN peacekeeping operations, Morocco occupies ninth place globally. The Kingdom also chairs the UN Peacebuilding Commission for 2026 and serves as coordinator of the Non-Aligned Movement on peacekeeping issues, positions that underscore its growing diplomatic role in international peace and security affairs.
Lacroix’s visit comes at a time when the United Nations is advancing a series of reforms launched by Secretary-General António Guterres. These include the “UN 80” initiative, which seeks to streamline the organization’s structures and improve efficiency, as well as a broader strategic review of peacekeeping operations and the international peace and security architecture.
The reforms aim to strengthen the effectiveness of UN action and reinforce the role of political solutions in conflict prevention and resolution.
