Benin on Tuesday reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity over all its territory, including the Sahara, while reiterating that Rabat’s Autonomy Plan remains the only credible and realistic basis for resolving the regional dispute.
The position was outlined in a joint communiqué issued after the seventh session of the Morocco-Benin Joint Cooperation Commission in Cotonou. The meeting was co-chaired by Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Beninese Foreign Minister Corinne Amori Brunet, who also welcomed UN Security Council Resolution 2797, saying it reinforces the Autonomy Plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the framework for achieving a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution.
As part of Benin’s plans to expand its diplomatic and consular network, Amori Brunet said she would advocate for opening a Beninese consular office in Laayoune, in Morocco’s southern provinces. She also announced plans to visit Dakhla in the near future to assess the region’s economic and social development and explore opportunities for bilateral partnerships.
