The United States has reiterated its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, describing it as a pathway to resolving the dispute and achieving prosperity.
Speaking at the opening of GITEX Africa Morocco 2026 in Marrakech, U.S. Ambassador to Morocco Richard Duke Buchan III said Washington supports the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a solution to the regional conflict.
“The United States supports the Moroccan autonomy plan as a path to resolution and prosperity,” the ambassador stated.
He also revealed growing interest from American investors in the region.“American investors are contacting our embassy and consulate non-stop, ready to invest in the Sahara,” he said.
The U.S. diplomat added that American companies are willing to support Morocco’s development efforts.
He noted that U.S. firms are keen to contribute to the vision set out by King Mohammed VI for all regions of the Kingdom.
Buchan further highlighted the economic potential of the Moroccan Sahara. “The economic opportunity in the Moroccan Sahara is unlimited, and American companies are here to make that opportunity a reality,” he said.
In December 2020, Washington officially recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara in a presidential proclamation issued during the administration of Donald Trump.
Since then, U.S. officials have maintained support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as a framework for resolving the dispute.
