Algeria stops Gas supplies to Morocco, Rabat: No big effect

The Algerian presidency officially announced on Sunday, the non-renewal of the contract for the gas pipeline "Maghreb-Europe" crossing Morocco to Spain, for which the agreement expired at midnight, and therefore Algeria stops supplying Morocco with gas permanently.

Algeria justified this decision "in view of the aggressive practices of the Kingdom of Morocco towards Algeria, which affect national unity," accusations that Morocco has previously denied.

"The decision announced by the Algerian authorities not to renew the agreement on the Maghreb-European gas pipeline will currently have little impact on the performance of the national electricity system," said a joint communique between the Moroccan National Office of Electricity and Potable Water and the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Minerals.

According to the same source, the nature of Morocco's neighborhood, and in anticipation of this decision, the necessary arrangements have been taken to ensure the continuity of the country's supply of electricity, where other options are currently being studied for sustainable alternatives in the medium and long term.

It should be noted that it was expected that Algeria would take this step against Morocco, given the tense bilateral relations, which have intensified in recent months due to the Sahara issue, and recently ended with Algeria completely severing its diplomatic relations with Morocco.
