US, Iran and Israel Reach Fragile Two-Week Ceasefire Amid Uncertainty

A two-week ceasefire agreement between Iran, the United States and Israel was reached on Wednesday, marking a temporary halt to hostilities in a conflict that has shaken the region for weeks.

The announcement came after U.S. President Donald Trump stepped back from earlier threats to escalate the war, instead endorsing a limited truce aimed at reducing tensions and opening the door for further negotiations.

According to initial statements, the ceasefire was intended to take effect immediately, although uncertainty quickly emerged over its exact terms and scope.

Conflicting accounts surfaced regarding the details of the agreement, with Trump at one point referring to a proposed plan by Iran as “workable” before later dismissing it as fraudulent without further clarification.

Israel publicly backed the ceasefire arrangement with Iran, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon would continue, raising questions about whether the truce extended beyond direct Iran-Israel hostilities.

This position appeared to contradict statements from Pakistan, which has played a mediating role and suggested that the ceasefire would also cover fighting in Lebanon.

Pakistan further said that talks aimed at consolidating a broader peace agreement were expected to begin in Islamabad within days, signaling that the current ceasefire may serve as a preliminary step toward a more durable arrangement.

Despite the announcement of the truce, tensions remained high, with uncertainty surrounding how the ceasefire would be implemented on the ground and whether all parties would adhere to its terms.

The agreement also includes provisions related to the strategic Strait of Hormuz, with indications that maritime traffic would resume under new arrangements, although the specifics remain unclear.

Questions have also emerged over Iran’s position during the ceasefire period, particularly regarding its continued policies on uranium enrichment and regional activities, which were among the central causes of the conflict.

Key issues remain unresolved under the current truce, including disagreements over Iran’s nuclear program, ballistic missile capabilities and the role of regional armed groups.

Iran has reportedly set conditions for a more permanent end to the war, including the withdrawal of U.S. forces from the region, the lifting of sanctions and the release of frozen assets.

However, these demands are widely seen as difficult to reconcile with U.S. and allied positions, suggesting that the ceasefire may face significant challenges if negotiations do not progress.

It also remains unclear what will happen once the two-week ceasefire expires, with no clear framework yet in place for extending the truce or transitioning to a long-term settlement.
