US and Iran Exchange Fresh Strikes as Peace Talks Face Growing Obstacles

Military tensions between the United States and Iran intensified again this week, with both sides reporting fresh strikes against each other's military assets, underscoring the fragility of diplomatic efforts aimed at ending nearly three months of conflict across the Middle East.

The latest exchange began after the U.S. military announced that it had carried out strikes over the weekend against Iranian air defense systems, a ground control station, and two drones that Washington said posed a threat to maritime traffic. American officials described the operation as a response to what they called “aggressive Iranian actions,” including the reported downing of a U.S. drone operating in international airspace.

Iran, however, presented its own military response as retaliatory. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Monday that it had targeted a military air base used by U.S. forces following an attack on southern Iran. Although Tehran did not disclose the location of the base, Kuwait condemned missile and drone attacks on its territory after activating its air defenses, warning that such actions risk undermining efforts to reduce regional tensions.

The renewed hostilities rattled global energy markets, with oil prices climbing more than three percent on Monday. Markets have remained highly sensitive to developments since the outbreak of the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran in late February, a conflict that has disrupted regional stability and threatened critical energy supply routes.

Regional concerns deepened further as Israel expanded military operations in Lebanon against Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed armed group. Israeli authorities announced new troop deployments deeper into Lebanese territory, while additional strikes were ordered against targets in Beirut’s southern suburbs, a stronghold of Hezbollah.

Despite the ongoing violence, diplomatic channels remain active. Pakistan has continued mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran in an attempt to secure a more durable ceasefire after temporary arrangements repeatedly failed to prevent further military exchanges. Similar retaliatory strikes were reported between the two sides only days earlier.

In Washington, President Donald Trump sought to project optimism regarding negotiations with Tehran. In a social media statement, he reiterated his belief that Iran remains interested in reaching an agreement while criticizing domestic opponents who have questioned the administration’s diplomatic strategy. Trump argued that the situation would ultimately be resolved successfully despite ongoing skepticism.

Iranian officials, however, accused the United States of sending mixed signals. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said negotiations were taking place in an atmosphere of deep mistrust, arguing that Washington has repeatedly altered its positions and introduced contradictory demands. According to Tehran, such uncertainty has complicated efforts to achieve meaningful progress at the negotiating table.

Major disagreements continue to divide the two sides. While Trump has repeatedly stated that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains Washington’s central objective, Tehran insists its nuclear program is peaceful and has demanded broad sanctions relief as well as the release of billions of dollars in frozen oil revenues held abroad.

The conflict in Lebanon remains another significant obstacle to diplomacy. As Israel and Hezbollah continue to exchange accusations of ceasefire violations, the United States has intensified diplomatic contacts with both Beirut and Tel Aviv. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reportedly discussed proposals for a gradual de-escalation framework with Lebanese and Israeli leaders, although prospects for a broader regional settlement remain uncertain as fighting continues on multiple fronts.
