United Nations Security Council members have condemned ongoing attacks by the Houthi militia against Saudi Arabia, including strikes that have caused damage to civilians and energy infrastructure.
In a statement, council members expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia in confronting attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.
They also affirmed the Kingdom’s inherent right to self-defense in accordance with international law.
The council members condemned missile strikes targeting Saudi Arabia, as well as attacks and threats against commercial shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
They stressed the need to protect commercial vessels and their crews while ensuring freedom of navigation in line with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The Security Council also reiterated its support for the internationally recognized Yemeni government and reaffirmed its commitment to Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
The council expressed continued support for UN Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg and his efforts to broker a comprehensive political settlement.
It said the settlement should be based on agreed references and relevant Security Council resolutions.
The statement comes as attacks and threats in the Red Sea and surrounding waterways continue to raise concerns over the safety of commercial shipping and regional stability.
