Iran Appoints New Security Chief After Larijani Killed in Airstrike

Iran has appointed a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as the new secretary of its Supreme National Security Council, following the killing of Ali Larijani in an airstrike.

State television reported that Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr has been named to the post, one of the country’s most influential security positions.

Zolghadr, who holds the rank of brigadier general in the Revolutionary Guard, previously served as secretary of Iran’s Expediency Council, a body that advises the supreme leadership and arbitrates legislative disputes.

He replaces Larijani, a senior political figure whose death in an airstrike marked a significant development in Iran’s security and political landscape.

The Supreme National Security Council plays a central role in shaping Iran’s defence and strategic policies, making the appointment closely watched amid ongoing regional tensions.
