OCP North America has announced the arrival in the United States of the first shipment of Moroccan phosphate fertilizer since the temporary suspension of countervailing duties (CVD) on Moroccan phosphate fertilizer imports.
In a statement sent to Assahifa English, OCP North America said a vessel carrying approximately 54,000 tonnes of Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) from Morocco had arrived at the Port of New Orleans. The fertilizer will be distributed to U.S. farmers, helping strengthen supplies ahead of the autumn agricultural season.
The shipment follows the U.S. administration’s decision to temporarily suspend CVDs on imports of Moroccan phosphate fertilizers. According to OCP North America, the measure helps restore U.S. farmers’ access to an additional source of phosphate fertilizer after several years of limited supply.
Following the administration’s announcement of the temporary suspension on June 29, OCP said it held discussions with the U.S. Department of Commerce and other relevant authorities to clarify implementation procedures and ensure compliance with applicable requirements before deliveries began.
With the necessary guidance now finalized and demand from U.S. customers confirmed, shipments can proceed during the period of temporary suspension of the duties applicable to phosphate fertilizers from Morocco, the company said.
“This shipment demonstrates our commitment to supplying the U.S. market,” Kevin Kimm, CEO of OCP North America, said.
“The temporary suspension has enabled the return of Moroccan phosphate fertilizers to the U.S. market. We are now focused on strengthening available supply and ensuring U.S. farmers have access to the fertilizers they need, when they need them,” he added.
OCP North America said TSP plays an important role in its approach to customized fertilization solutions. By providing phosphorus separately from other nutrients, the fertilizer gives farmers greater flexibility to adapt applications to the specific needs of their crops and soils.
The company said this approach supports more precise plant nutrition management and follows the 4R principles: the right nutrient source, at the right rate, at the right time and in the right place.
OCP also said that more than five years of restricted access to Moroccan phosphate fertilizers had limited the supply sources available to U.S. farmers. At the same time, domestic phosphate extraction in the United States has declined by more than 50% since 1995.
Against this backdrop, current market conditions have led many farmers to delay decisions on fertilizer applications for the current season, according to the statement.
The arrival of the shipment, OCP said, also demonstrates its ability to mobilize its supply chain in response to market needs and contribute to reliable access to phosphate-based fertilization solutions adapted to local agricultural requirements.
OCP said it has consistently prioritized close cooperation with farmers, customers and industry stakeholders to contribute to the resilience of U.S. agriculture.
While the temporary suspension of the duties allows OCP to help improve fertilizer availability for U.S. farmers in the short term, the company said greater long-term visibility would support planning and investment in OCP North America’s capabilities dedicated to the U.S. market, while contributing to adequate fertilizer supplies for American farmers over the longer term.
