Morocco's Agri-Food Exports Reach Record MAD 86.2 Billion Despite Climate Challenges

Morocco's agri-food exports climbed to a record MAD 86.2 billion ($8.6 billion) in 2025, up 38% from nearly MAD 62 billion in 2020, reinforcing the sector's position as one of the Kingdom's leading sources of foreign currency despite mounting climate-related pressures on agricultural production.

The figures were announced following the 2026 Board of Directors meeting of Morocco Foodex, the country's autonomous export control and coordination agency, chaired by Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests Ahmed El Bouari. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, agri-food products accounted for nearly 18% of Morocco's total exports in 2025, making the sector the country's third-largest source of export revenue.

Export volumes also continued to expand, reaching 4.7 million tonnes in 2025, representing a 9% increase compared with 2020 and a 49% rise from 2015. The ministry said the figures reflect the growing competitiveness of Moroccan agricultural, food-processing, and fisheries products across international markets despite an increasingly challenging global environment.

However, Morocco's citrus industry faced a difficult export season as extreme weather conditions reduced exportable supplies. Citrus exports during the 2025-2026 campaign fell to 553,000 tonnes, down 12% from 626,000 tonnes during the previous season. Vegetable exports, particularly tomatoes—one of Morocco's flagship agricultural products—also recorded declines.

Speaking at the meeting, El Bouari highlighted Morocco Foodex's role in supporting exports of agricultural, agri-food, and fisheries products through technical quality controls, market intelligence, regulatory monitoring, and export promotion. He said these efforts have helped strengthen the international competitiveness of Moroccan products while enabling exporters to meet increasingly stringent global market requirements.

The minister also stressed the importance of maintaining a balance between export growth and domestic market needs. He called for continued efforts to increase export volumes, diversify destination markets, and support new exporters, particularly young entrepreneurs and startups, in line with the objectives of Morocco's Generation Green 2020-2030 agricultural strategy.

During the meeting, Morocco Foodex Director General Ghita El Ghorfi presented the agency's technical and financial performance for 2025, along with progress on the 2026 budget and the latest export trends. The results underscore Morocco's continued efforts to consolidate its position as a major agri-food exporter while adapting to the growing impact of climate change on agricultural production.
