The European Investment Bank plans to mobilise more than €700 million ($825 million) in investments in Morocco in 2026, its President Nadia Calviño said, underscoring the growing momentum of the bank's partnership with the Kingdom.
Speaking to Morocco's state news agency MAP during her first official visit to Morocco as EIB President, Calviño said the European lender had significantly expanded its activities in the country over the past five years.
"Our partnership is now gaining significant momentum. Over the past five years, the EIB Group has tripled its financing in Morocco. This year, we are targeting more than €700 million in investments," she said.
Calviño noted that since launching its operations in Morocco in 1979, the EIB has invested more than €12 billion across a broad range of sectors, including energy security, innovation and education.
She highlighted several flagship projects backed by the bank, including the Tanger Med Port, the Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex, the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fez and the Medusa submarine fibre-optic cable.
According to the EIB President, the expansion of the partnership reflects a strong alignment between Morocco and the European Union's priorities, particularly in building resilient infrastructure, modernising transport networks, supporting the private sector and promoting education and rural schooling, especially for girls.
Calviño said the bank is advancing EU-Morocco priorities through its ability to combine loans, technical assistance and European financial instruments, including grants and guarantees, in order to turn political ambitions into concrete projects that directly benefit citizens and businesses.
She also announced that the EIB will assume the presidency of the multilateral development banks in 2027, a role that she said would provide an opportunity to further promote partnerships based on trust, shared priorities and tangible results.
"In this context, we want to place particular emphasis on the importance of win-win partnerships such as the one we have built with Morocco. This type of cooperation, based on trust, aligned priorities and tangible results, provides a solid foundation for our future action," Calviño said.
The latest investment plans underscore Morocco's growing importance as a strategic partner for European financial institutions and highlight the Kingdom's efforts to position itself as a regional hub for infrastructure, renewable energy and connectivity projects.
