US Senator Joe Wilson called on Algeria to sever ties with the Polisario Front and back Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, in a strongly worded post on his X account.
Wilson praised President Donald Trump and Special Envoy Witkoff for their “incredible efforts” to encourage peace between Morocco and Algeria, adding that such progress could also reduce Russian influence in North Africa.
Addressing Algeria directly, the senator emphasized that the country would benefit from a “strong relationship with the U.S.,” highlighting potential economic and military advantages. He described the Polisario Front as “communist terrorists destabilizing Morocco and trying to establish a Marxist state in the desert” and called for Algerian support for the “just solution” of autonomy for the Sahrawi people.
Wilson also warned Algeria against maintaining alliances with Russia, Iran, and Tunisian President Kais Saied, suggesting that distancing from these actors could open the way for a prosperous future for Algeria and its citizens.
The comments come amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to address tensions in the Maghreb and promote regional stability in the Western Sahara dispute.
