Senegal appointed Patrick Vieira as its new head coach on Tuesday, replacing Pape Thiaw, who was dismissed after the team’s elimination from the World Cup in the round of 32.
The Senegalese Football Federation announced Vieira’s appointment in a post on Instagram but did not disclose the length of his contract.
The 50-year-old Vieira won the World Cup with France as a player and enjoyed a distinguished club career with Inter Milan, AC Milan, Arsenal and Manchester City.
His coaching career has been less successful. Vieira has previously managed New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace and Strasbourg.
His most recent job was with Genoa, where he was dismissed after less than a year despite a positive start, with the club sitting bottom of Serie A at the time.
Senegal were eliminated from the World Cup by Belgium after surrendering a 2-0 lead with around five minutes of normal time remaining.
The team had also come close to exiting in the group stage after defeats by France and Norway. Thiaw and his coaching staff were dismissed less than two weeks later.
Thiaw, 45, had been appointed in 2024 and led Senegal to a disputed continental title in Morocco this year before the Confederation of African Football overturned the result.
Senegal’s appeal against the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport is scheduled to be heard on October 8.
