Nigeria offers repatriation as anti-foreigner protests mount in South Africa

Nigeria has begun processing requests to evacuate its citizens from South Africa after a wave of protests targeting foreign nationals raised fears of escalating violence.

Foreign Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu said at least 130 Nigerians have applied to return home under a newly introduced government-assisted repatriation scheme. The initiative marks Abuja’s first organized response to growing security concerns among its diaspora.

The development follows demonstrations last week in Pretoria and Johannesburg, where protesters called for stricter action against undocumented migrants. Demonstrators argued that irregular immigration is placing pressure on employment, public services, and security, while migrant-rights groups have pushed back, warning that foreigners are being blamed for broader economic challenges.

Abuja has strongly condemned violence against its nationals, including the reported deaths of two Nigerians allegedly assaulted by security personnel. According to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria is seeking full cooperation from South African authorities, including access to autopsy reports, case files, and legal proceedings for the victims’ families.

The Nigerian government has called for accountability, stressing that any confirmed wrongdoing should result in disciplinary and judicial action.

Tensions have been building despite recent assurances from South African authorities that measures would be taken to curb xenophobic attacks. Several African countries, including Ghana, have also reported incidents involving their nationals.

Further protests are expected on May 4 and May 8, with Nigerian officials closely monitoring developments. Abuja has already summoned South Africa’s High Commissioner and says its diplomatic missions are coordinating with local authorities to enhance protection for Nigerian citizens.
