Niger’s Minister of National Defense, Salifou Moudi, said on Saturday that authorities were gradually regaining control of the situation in the capital, Niamey, following an attempted mutiny by a group of soldiers.
In a statement broadcast on state television and reported by the state-run news agency, Moudi said that “on the night of August 28-29, a group of soldiers violated military regulations by taking some of their comrades hostage inside the barracks of Base 101 in Niamey [located within the Niamey airport complex] and carrying out attacks on certain sensitive sites in the capital.”
“The rapid response of the defense and security forces helped contain the disturbance and gradually restore control over those sites,” he added.
